Sometimes us indie developers do not have this luxury and find ourselves having to take up more than one of those jobs, often enough we will use multiple softwares within our workflows. Let me lay this out like this, In most cases there will be multiple people working on things, one would create the mesh, one would texture it, one would rig and or animate the mesh.

It's great for what it is, and it's free but it's not as good as Silo2. Well that was a great application and it's getting even beeter but much like Silo it soley concentrates on teh modeling and uving aspect of model creation. The reason for that was I began freelancing to make money to pay my way through training and such. Along with Blender there is the aforementioned Wings3D which I started out with way back before I started learning maya officially. It's easier to grasp and doesn't boggle you down with a million features, however Blender would be an ideal application for those who are wanting to get intot he industry without spending any money, but like I have said if you cannot get on with it very well someting like Silo for just creating models and uv maps for your mesh's then I would suggest you try the Demo of SIlo2 as it is more efficient, but don't pay attention to those hating because this cannot rig or animate your models as it's not intended to anyhow. Here is something that I want to say! - There are some GREAT free alternatives, such as Wings3D and Blender, but that being said, some people just can't get on with blender very well and I personally believe that Silo2 is more intuitive within its workflow and interface.

For those only looking to create personal mods forgames and such I guess that would be fine to do as well. Not only is this cheaper than the $3,500 price tage on Maya or 3DS Max, but if you do get those softwares under the student version you're not able to use them commercially and those of you who do not care then I feel sorry for you. I suppose if you're only learning and want the student version of such applications to be hired into a big company that will provide such high cost softwares then it would be fine for some of those comments of "just get 3ds max or maya student version" and for those of you indie developers and hobbyists applications like this are going to be a blessing in disguise. I am a Maya user and I own Maya 2012, I also own and use Zbrush. Realistically I could get by with just Blender, Unity, XCode, and royalty free music online, but the other stuff adds some convenience.Personally I prefer this interface and workflow to that of Blender. I'll probably end up with a combination of all three. I haven't decided what I'm doing for sound quite yet, the choices are:Ĭobble something together in Garageband on my Mac. ZBrush if I need special alphas, or for high resolution sculpting (this doesn't happen much for what I'm actually working on, but I do like to go in and create something now and then, mostly for fun).
